Payson, UT (Aug. 28, 2017) – The season ended on a high as Team Rocky Mountain ATV/MC-KTM-WPS headed to Ironman MX in Crawfordsville, IN for the 12th and final round of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. Team rider Blake Baggett secured 3rd place in the overall championship standings, while Benny Bloss crushed it for his best moto finish of the season, while Dakota Alix dug deep and put in another impressive ride.

Rider Reports

Blake Baggett: 3th Place Overall (450MX Class)

Blake Baggett came into Ironman still within striking distance of the championship. He went out during morning practice ready to fight and posted the third fastest time of the day.

Blake would run solid in moto 1, as he rounded the first turn in second, almost grabbing the holeshot from Eli Tomac.  After taking advantage of Tomac going down, Blake would advance and then became entrenched in a battle with Marvin Musquin for position and championship points. He continued to ride an excellent race, fighting hard till the end coming in 3rd.

After the way they finished in moto 1, Blake and Marvin were tied dead even in points going into the final moto.  Whoever beat the other, got 2nd in the championship.  Blake launched out of the gate at full throttle and nailed the holeshot, with Cole Seely and Marvin Musquin right behind him.  Marvin would make quick work of Seely and then it was Blake in the lead with Marvin in second.  At the end of the lap, there was one section that Marvin and Herlings were getting that was a pure strength move.  Unfortunately it was the opposite of the perfect storm for Blake, and it was one of the few obstacles that he just could not do with his injured thumb.  Marvin was able to make the pass there, and each lap it really came down to that one section, and the one second advantage it would play in Marvin’s favor.

Herling’s would work his way right behind Blake and be able to make the pass on Blake for second with just 3 laps to go.  Herling’s would get Marvin as well after Marvin made a mistake, and as quick as the series seemed to have started at Hangtown in May, the checkers would fall on the final moto at Ironman with Marvin inching our Blake by just 2 points in the championship standings.

The two riders would give KTM 2 orange bikes in the top 3 overall standings – and one heck of a summer.  For Blake to do what he did with his thumb for the entire second half of the season, was nothing short of a miracle and the entire team could not be any more proud of him.

“I did what I needed to do out there,” said Blake. “Today I knew it was going to come down to who beat who for the points chase, and it did. I gave it my all, the track was so, so rough and unfortunately for me and my thumb, it was just all we had.”

Dakota Alix: 18th Place Overall (450MX Class)

Dakota Alix came in with a torn groin muscle from moto 2 at Budds Creek. The sore leg would handicap him all day in the deep ruts, not allowing him to finish off the final race the way he has been rding since the mid-way point of the season. He started moto 1 inside the top twenty and continued to charge forward. He would ride a consistent race and work his way up to 17th place at the checkered flag.

In moto 2, Dakota rounded the first turn inside the top twenty. He continued riding a strong race, reaching the checkered flag in 18th place. His 17-18 score earned him 18th overall and secured 14th place in the championship standings.

Benny Bloss: 15th Place Overall (450MX Class)

Benny Bloss would crush it and return to the his last year speed in moto one, coming from outside the top ten to move himself up to 8th by the end of the moto.

Moto 2 would prove to be more of a challenge, as he found himself farther back in the field. He was on route to the same form as moto one as he made passes and working his way into the the top ten.  While making a move for 9th, he would take a spill in a corner. The small spill would unfortunately tweak a simple item that took almost a lap to get fixed. Once remounted, the moto was shot, but in typical Benny Bloss fashion – pulling out was not an option. He would see his final moto out and finish the day with a 15th place overall and finishing the season 19th place in the championship.

Team Rocky Mountain ATV/MC-KTM-WPS will now focus on the USGP round of the MXGP Championship as Dakota Alix and Benny Bloss prepare to take on the competition at WW Motocross Park in Jacksonville, FL.
